Op-Ed in the San Francisco Chronicle

My Op-Ed from yesterday’s San Francisco Chronicle:

Senate is no protection for abortion rights
Bush could make a recess appointment to Supreme Court

Many voters who call themselves pro-choice, believe abortion should remain legal and hope Roe vs. Wade will remain the law of the land plan to vote for President Bush in November despite his opposition to Roe.

These voters may think the president won’t appoint a justice to the Supreme Court who would vote to overturn Roe, or that if he tried, Senate Democrats would filibuster the nomination as they have for several of Bush’s more radical appointees.

Bush’s recent recess appointments of Mississippi Judge Charles W. Pickering and Alabama Attorney General William H. Pryor Jr. to federal circuit courts should serve as a reality check to these voters.
